Rust boat base guide 2026: docks, water bunkers & ships

What a boat base is in Rust — shore docks, ocean bunkers, and player-built ships for Deep Sea runs in 2026.

A boat base supports water play in Rust. That means a shore dock, an ocean bunker, or a player-built ship.

What counts as a boat base?

Players use "boat base" for three different builds. All show up under the boat tag on RustBases.gg.

Pick the type that matches your wipe. A dock helps every coastal run. A ship matters once you push the Deep Sea.

Why do boat bases matter in 2026?

Facepunch shipped the Naval Update in February 2026. Player-made boats and the Deep Sea changed how ocean play works.

You can still run a normal land base and keep a rowboat outside. A real boat base cuts travel time, protects your vessel, and supports longer ocean loops.

Creators now ship dock garages, moon-pool style water bunkers, and full custom ships. High-view guides focus on sealed garages, bunkered loot, and boats that actually steer.

What should a shore boat base include?

A shore design is still a normal base first. The boat pieces are the extras that make it worth the spot.

  • Sealed garage or dock — room for a rowboat, RHIB, or modular hull
  • Airlocked entrance — so an open garage door does not soft-side your core
  • Bedroom near the dock — respawn and reboard after a water death
  • Bunker or sealed loot — ocean spots get checked often
  • Turret coverage on the water approach — if you can afford electricity

A garage with no airlock is free loot. Protect the door path like any other soft side.

How do ocean and water bunker bases work?

Ocean bunkers sit on water foundations. Many use scuba or moon-pool style entries that force raiders through awkward angles.

These bases trade farm space for raid cost. You get less compound room. You gain hard approaches and short paths to boats.

Watch for:

  • Stability or roof bunkers on the water shell
  • Honeycomb around the TC and loot
  • Clear swim-in routes you can defend
  • Honest upkeep — water builds still decay like land ones

Build these after you can farm stone and metal. A half-finished ocean shell is easy to splash for.

How do player-built boats work?

Place a Boat Building Station in ocean water. Use a Boat Building Plan to snap boat blocks.

You need a steering wheel and thrust — sails, small engines, or both. Add an anchor, then test near shore before you load good loot.

Keep these rules in mind:

  • Taper the bow — flat fronts drag and crawl
  • Balance left and right mass so the hull tracks straight
  • Lock the helm code before the first cargo run
  • Prove turns, reverse, and anchor before a Deep Sea push

You cannot freely edit a boat the same way once you are deep offshore. Fix the hull at a station first.

What is the Deep Sea, and do you need a boat base for it?

The Deep Sea is an offshore region past the map edge. Facepunch calls it high risk and high reward.

You cannot build there. Loot does not respawn. The zone opens and closes like a world event. Strong boats — player-made hulls, RHIBs, or PT boats — are how you get in and out.

A mainland dock base is still useful. Park, repair, and store loot after each run. Treat the ship as the trip tool, not your only home.

Set a return rule before you cross: fuel reserve, damage limit, or timer window. Turn back when you hit it.

Common boat base mistakes

  • Open dock, soft core — raiders walk the garage into your loot
  • No respawn by the water — long runs back after every swim death
  • Box-shaped ships — heavy, slow, and easy to catch
  • No fuel plan — engines die mid-trip with no Low Grade left
  • Skipping a sea trial — find steering bugs at shore, not offshore
  • Living in the Deep Sea — you cannot settle there; loot and leave

How to find boat bases on RustBases.gg

Filter by boat on the homepage. Add solo, bunker, or starter when you want a small dock shell.

Each card shows group size, footprint, and related tags. Compare a few docks before you commit a coastal build.

Frequently asked questions

What is a boat base in Rust? A boat base supports water play — shore docks, ocean bunkers, or player-built ships for Deep Sea runs.

How do you build a player-made boat in Rust? Place a Boat Building Station in the ocean. Use a Boat Building Plan, then add a wheel and sails or engines.

Can you live in the Deep Sea in Rust? No. You cannot build there, loot does not respawn, and the zone opens and closes like a world event. Use a strong boat and plan your return.

Do solo players need a boat garage? Yes if you farm oil, fish, or run the ocean often. A sealed garage keeps your boat safe and cuts travel time after a death.

What should you look for in a Rust boat base video? Look for a dock or garage, a bunker or sealed loot room, and clear upkeep. For ships, check helm access, fuel, and a tapered bow.

Happy building!
