Which Rust Base Footprint Should You Use?
2x2, 3x3, circle, egg — which Rust base footprint is actually worth building? Honest breakdown from an experienced builder.
The footprint is one of the first decisions you make on a new base. Here's the honest breakdown of what's worth building in 2026.
There's no bad footprint — only bad bases
This is the first thing to get right: the footprint doesn't make or break a base. A great 2x2 is stronger than a bad 4x4. A well-built circle is harder to raid than a sloppy 3x3.
That said, some footprints have a lot more going for them than others right now.
2x2 — the default for a reason
The 2x2 is the most versatile footprint in the game.
It has the largest library of YouTube designs. It works for solo, duo, trio, and quad play. Most base designers start here. If you're not sure what to build, a 2x2 gives you the most options and the most guides to follow.
2x3 — skip it
The 2x3 doesn't have a lot going for it. There aren't many strong designs built around it. You can't do as much with the layout as you can with a 2x2. If you're choosing between the two, find a good 2x2 design instead.
3x3 — largely outdated
The 3x3 used to be a common choice for medium groups. It's not anymore.
A 4x4 is just as strong, usually cheaper, and has far more design options. The only logical upgrade from a 3x3 is a 5x5 — and a 4x4 handles that job better for less cost. If someone's recommending a 3x3 in 2026, check when they posted it.
Circle and egg — worth building
Circle and egg footprints are genuinely strong options — especially for solos and small groups.
You get more customization than a square. The layout is more compact. They're generally harder to raid than an equivalent square base. Most players stick with squares out of habit. But a circle is often the better choice if you're comfortable with the build technique.
The upkeep difference between footprints is small. A 2x2 has 4 foundations. A circle base has about 6. An egg has around 10. That's roughly 50 stone difference per day — negligible. Upkeep is driven by your wall count and material tier, not your foundation shape.
Square vs. circle: how to pick
| Square (2x2, 4x4) | Circle / Egg | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Groups, open core designs | Solo, duo, compact builds |
| Design library | Huge | Smaller, more flexible |
| Raid difficulty | Easier to navigate | Harder to navigate |
| Build complexity | Low | Moderate |
Go square if you want open space, a big loot room, or you're building with a group.
Go circle if you want a compact, tight build and you're comfortable learning a different technique.
